John Boehner, the former GOP speaker of the House and a longtime marijuana opponent, is changing positions on weed.
Early Wednesday morning, Boehner tweeted that he would be joining Acreage Holdings, one of the largest marijuana producers in the United States. Boehner says that his thinking has ‘evolved’ on the issue.
I’m joining the board of #AcreageHoldings because my thinking on cannabis has evolved. I’m convinced de-scheduling the drug is needed so we can do research, help our veterans, and reverse the opioid epidemic ravaging our communities. @AcreageCannabis https://t.co/f5i9KcQD0W

This is a huge change in position for the former Congressman because for decades he fought any progress on marijuana reform. In 2011, he wrote that he was opposed to any legalization because he feared it would lead to increased use of all other drugs and alcohol.
During Boehner’s tenure as House speaker, almost 500,000 people were arrested for selling marijuana.
The hypocrisy of Boehner’s decision missed by Twitter users after his announcement. Check out some of the reactions below:
You gonna demand amnesty for those imprisoned for marijuana usage? Fuck off

Too bad you didn’t evolve your views on cannabis while you were Speaker of the House and could have actually done something about our terrible marijuana laws. Sad that you blocked progress then, and are cashing in now. Please use your platform to move this issue forward ASAP.

Nothing causes the rapid evolution of ideas in unemployed politicians quite like a paycheck.

Ah John you just wanna get paid now. No evolving. But that’s ok it’s capitalism

I do believe that medical marijuana can help offset the opioid epidemic. Many studies have shown this. But John Boehner is in it for the money, not the altruism. Otherwise he would work to free the thousands of non-violent people he threw into for-profit prisons.

Fuck you, John Boehner. It's going to take more than you making money off weed for me to forgive you for the trauma you inflicted on America for decades. Not even the finest quality hash could get me high enough to think of you as a decent human being.
