On Wednesday, on ABC’s The View, former Vice President Joe Biden and Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain, shared an emotional moment together.
Earlier this year, McCain’s father was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer that killed Beau, Biden’s son in 2015.
McCain started the segment off stating, “This is the hard part, bear with me, OK? I couldn’t get through your book, I tried. Your son Beau had the same cancer that my father was diagnosed with six months ago.”
She continued, “I think about Beau almost every day and I was told — sorry — that this doesn’t get easier, but that you cultivate the tools to work with this and to live with this. I know you and your family have been through tragedy that I couldn’t conceive of — what would you tell — it’s not about me, it’s about everyone with cancer.”
After she got emotional, Biden moved next to McCain to console her.

Biden, while holding McCain’s hand, stated, “One of the things that gave Beau courage … was John.”
He continued, “Your dad took care of my Beau .. became friends with Beau. Beau talked about your dad’s courage. Not about illness, but about his courage.”
He then talked about the research and work on cancer that has been done and encouraged her to have hope.
He stated, “There’s a lot of hope there. And if anybody can make it, [it’s] your dad.”
He concluded, “I swear, guys, we are gonna beat this damn disease, we really are.”
Later that day, Senator John McCain thanked Biden.
