On Wednesday, during the NATO summit breakfast, Trump said that Germany is “captive to Russia” because of its gas pipeline.
Trump stated, “If you look at it, Germany is a captive of Russia because they supply. They got rid of their coal plants. They got rid of their nuclear. They’re getting so much of the oil and gas from Russia. I think it’s something that NATO has to look at. I think it’s very inappropriate.”
According to videos captured of the moment, Chief of Staff John Kelly appeared to react negatively to the comment. Videos show that Kelly pursed his lips and looked away.

However, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered a completely different explanation for Kelly’s reaction.
Sanders stated, “[Kelly] was displeased because he was expecting a full breakfast and there were only pastries and cheese.”
However, in the video, the food has not been served yet.
