Following the recent firing of former FBI Director James Comey, the Justice Department announced that the Trump administration will now be under investigation by a special prosecutor. That prosecutor, Robert Mueller, is a former FBI director and known for possessing a great level of integrity.
This likely came as a surprise to Republicans as the order came from the new acting Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein. Here is a statement from Rosenstein regarding the news.
“In my capacity as acting attorney general I determined that it is in the public interest for me to exercise my authority and appoint a special counsel to assume responsibility for the matter,” Rosenstein put out in a statement.
“My decision is not a finding that crimes have been committed or that any prosecution is warranted. I have made no such determination. What I have determined is that based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command.”
How are Republicans taking the news? Well, if Mitch McConnell is any sign, they are clamming up and running from it. That’s right, McConnell had absolutely nothing to say to reporters regarding the president’s campaign now being under a special investigation. You can watch the cowardly dodging below.
