On Friday, the owner of Red Hen restaurant gave her explanation on why she booted White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders from the restaurant.
During her interview with the Washington Post, Wilkinson noted that she knew that keeping politics out of their restaurant was what kept her in business for 10 years. But she felt the need to do what she did. She explained she believed that Sanders worked for an “inhumane and unethical” administration.
She stated, “I’m not a huge fan of confrontation. I have a business, and I want the business to thrive. This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”
She recalled that she was at home when she got a call around 8 pm last night that Sanders, who booked the table under her husband’s name, came into the restaurant. So she drove herself to the restaurant to investigate.
She continued and explained she asked her employees about what to do. This is because she knew that several of her employees were gay and her staffers also saw that Sanders defended Trump’s zero tolerance policy.

She told her employees, “Tell me what you want me to do. I can ask her to leave.” They agreed, so she asked Sanders to join her on the patio “for a word.”
Wilkinson stated, “I was babbling a little, but I got my point across in a polite and direct fashion. I explained that the restaurant has certain standards that I feel it has to uphold, such as honesty, and compassion, and cooperation.”
She continued, “I said, ‘I’d like to ask you to leave.’
According to Wilkinson, Sanders responded, “That’s fine. I’ll go.” Sanders went back to her table, picked up her things and walked out.
However, Sanders later took to Twitter to complain about being booted.
Last night I was told by the owner of Red Hen in Lexington, VA to leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left. Her actions say far more about her than about me. I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so

She also seemed to be unfazed by the backlash she is receiving from Trump supporters. She stated, “Whatever happens, we will soldier on.”
She also added, “Absolutely, yes, I would have done the same thing again . . . We just felt there are moments in time when people need to live their convictions. This appeared to be one.”
